Parenting with the Next Generation in Mind

This past Sunday, as we walked through Psalm 78 together and celebrated Parent Commissioning, we were reminded of a powerful truth: “Parenting is helping the next generation remember God.”

Psalm 78 calls parents to think beyond immediate behaviour, short-term success, or simply surviving the week. It invites us to take the long view.  To prayerfully shape a home where children learn to know, trust, love, and follow Jesus over time. The Psalm reminds us that faith is meant to move through generations: “…tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.” (Psalm 78:4)

Most parents spend a lot of time reacting: solving problems, correcting behaviour, managing schedules, and trying to keep up with the pace of life. But Psalm 78 invites us to pause and ask a deeper question: What kind of people are we prayerfully hoping our children become?

Not just successful, or talented, or well-behaved, but people who genuinely remember God.

Below is a simple exercise to help you reflect as a family this week and begin to plan with the long-term in mind?
