Summer Read: Week #2

Read this:

Chapter #2 (Know Yourself That You May Know God)

Discuss or reflect on this:

Grab a journal, some friends, or your spouse and spend a few minutes reflecting on the reading from this week. Use these reflections questions to help you see what the Lord is teaching you and how He might be calling you to go deeper in this particular area.

  • What stood out to you or challenged you most from the reading this week?

  • Let’s begin this week with a tool that was introduced in chapter #1 but elaborated on in this chapter called “Exploring the Iceberg” - grab your journal and answer the following:

    • Right now in your life…what are you angry about?

    • Are there things that you are sad about currently?

    • What are you fearful about (health, finances, work, etc…)?

    • What are you enjoying and glad about?

  • As you journal out your feelings - what is that experience like for you?  Is it a completely new concept?  Something that is unfamiliar and uncomfortable?

  • On pages 49-53, Scazzero talks about the three major temptations around the false self.  Which of these three temptations do you most identify with and how do you see that take effect in your life?

  • What is differentiation and why might this be a helpful tool for a follower of Jesus to apply to his/her life?

  • Read through the differentiation scale on pages 59-61 and give yourself a score?  Why did you give yourself the score you did? What is one thing you can begin to prayerfully ask the Lord to help you work on living into your “authentic self”?

Pray through this:

As you go throughout your week, spend some time praying through what the Lord is teaching you. Grab a sticky note or your journal and jot down these prayer points and re-visit them throughout the week.

  • Begin by taking 2 minutes to be silent before the Lord. Embrace the difficulty of being completely silent and learn to listen to the Lord before speaking to Him.

  • Ask God to help reveal the areas of false self temptation that exist in your life. Take time to repent and ask God to forgive you for the ways in which you look for an identity apart from Christ.

  • Augustine, the great church father of North Africa once prayed, “O God, let me know myself; let me know you.“ As you go throughout your week, would you make that a continual prayer.
