Waiting Isn't a Waste
This past Sunday we talked about the importance of waiting in our journey with Jesus (you can watch the sermon here). We looked at Psalm 27 where David writes, “ Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!” (v.14).
What we see in Scripture is that waiting is a keystone component in our relationship with God, which if we’re honest is probably one of the last things we want to hear. And that’s because waiting is hard. No one likes to wait.
So how is it then that we can wait well? In his book “Waiting isn’t a Waste” pastor Mark Vroegop provides a very helpful tool to make the discipline of waiting more accessible and applicable.
The tool is called “Mapping God’s Faithfulness”. Vroegop writes, “The goal is to trace the faithfulness of God through previous seasons of waiting and rehearse important lessons to fuel endurance.”
He provides the following worksheet with four sections:
Situation: briefly describe the waiting circumstance.
Resolution: summarize how the situation resolved or concluded.
“God is…”: identify a few character qualities of God that were meaningful.
Lesson: record the truth of the principle you learned.
Situation | Resolution | “God is...” | “Lesson” |
---|---|---|---|
If you find yourself in a season of waiting (big or small), which many do, use this tool. Print it out. Create one in your prayer journal. Hang it on the fridge. Go over it with a friend. In our waiting let us say confidently with David, “I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living!” (Psalm 27:13).
