Safe Families

One of the most prolific themes throughout Scripture is God’s care for the vulnerable.  In the Old Testament God commands the Israelites to, “not mistreat any widow or fatherless child” (Exodus 22:22).  In Job 34:28 God is described as a God who hears the cries of the poor and the afflicted.  And in Psalm 68:5 it says that God is the, “Father of the fatherless and protector of widows.”

Jesus, himself, when asked by John the Baptist's disciples if he was truly the Messiah responded by saying: “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them” (Luke 7:22).

As followers of Jesus who are tasked with bringing signs of the Kingdom here on Earth - one of the clearest signs of Jesus’ Kingdom is to provide aid and relief to the most vulnerable sectors of society.  One of those societal sectors are children who are in (or are about to enter) the foster care program.  Because of sin, families in our city experience extreme brokenness on a daily basis.  The church has an incredible opportunity to demonstrate and talk about the healing hope of Jesus.

One such ministry that is starting in Halifax that is aimed at aiding this vulnerable population of children and their respective families is a ministry called “Safe Families”.  Below is a video that talks about the vision and mission of Safe Families along with the opportunities that we have as a church to help this ministry grow and meet needs in our city.  As a church, Port City is partnering alongside other churches to help establish this new and much needed ministry in our city.

Your next step is to…

  • Watch this video and prayerfully begin to ask the Lord how you might be involved.

  • Then plan to attend one of the three possible interest meetings at the end of this month:

    • Friday, May 24 at 7 pm (Christ Church Halifax)

    • Saturday, May 25 at 10 am (note there's a typo on the IG post!) (St. Stephen's Church)

    • Saturday, May 25 at 7 pm (Colby Community Church)

We prayerfully long to be a church that specifically and clearly puts on display the extravagant love that we see in the gospel.  One of our core values is that we engage in the mission and Safe Families is another way we can engage in the mission here in our city. We look forward to sharing more information with you about this ministry in the upcoming weeks.
