Summer Read: Week #8

Read this:

Chapter #8 (Go to the next step to develop a “Rule of Life”)

Discuss or reflect on this:

Grab a journal, some friends, or your spouse and spend a few minutes reflecting on the reading from this week. Use these reflections questions to help you see what the Lord is teaching you and how He might be calling you to go deeper in this particular area.

  • What stood out to you or challenged you most from the reading this week?

  • In your own words, describe what a Rule of Life is? Do you have something like this in place in your life currently? If not, how could implementing a Rule of Life be helpful (be specific)?

  • Read Acts 2:42-47 - what are some of the common practices you see here that the early church was implementing on a regular basis (daily/weekly)? How do you think this shaped the formation of the early church?

  • Use the chart below to think about your life currently in these four quadrants. Take time to list out one thing you are currently doing in each of these areas to nurture your relationship with Jesus

  • Before the summer ends…make plans with a friend or your spouse to sit down and together work on building out a Rule of Life.  Use the resources here from Emotional Healthy Discipleship to create rhythms in our life that will deepen your love for and walk with Jesus.

Pray through this:

As you go throughout your week, spend some time praying through what the Lord is teaching you. Grab a sticky note or your journal and jot down these prayer points and re-visit them throughout the week.

  • Begin by taking 2 minutes to be silent before the Lord.  Embrace the difficulty of being completely silent and learn to listen to the Lord before speaking to Him.

  • Using your journal and your time of silence - prayerfully ask God to reveal ways in which your relationship with him is hampered because of life’s continual distractions.

  • Ask God to show you through His Word and through the community of believers around you ways in which He is calling you to grow - remembering the truth in Philippians 1:6.

  • As we close out this summer book study - pray and ask God not only for discipline and self-control to apply these truths but courage to walk in them as life’s obstacles and sin’s obstructions get in the way.
