Why I'm Excited About This Advent Series
One thing I’ve noticed as a dad over the years is that whenever one of my younger children gets excited about something, they spontaneously burst into song. Whether a birthday party is around the corner, a friend is coming to play, or a long-awaited Christmas present is being unwrapped, their joy overflows in a made-up melody.
From the beginning of time, song has been a powerful way to express emotion, tell a story, and stir our memory. As the world awaited its true and promised King, songs were sung—songs that arose from hearts full of hope and joyful expectation for the coming Christ.
This Advent season, we will look at four of those songs that help us capture the emotion, power, and significance of that sacred moment—the moment when God came to be with us (Matthew 1:23). From Mary’s Magnificat to the chorus of angels announcing good news to the shepherds, these songs reveal the glory and hope of the God-Man who came to dwell among us.
As we celebrate this Christmas season, we remember the true songs of the season—songs that awaken lasting joy and eternal hope. We join the chorus of countless believers throughout history in singing praise to Emmanuel, God with us. Yet we also sing with anticipation, looking forward to Christ’s return. Like a child eagerly awaiting her birthday, we too craft our own chorus as we joyfully await the day when Christ comes again to fully rule and reign.
So over these next four weeks invite a friend, bring your Bible, and let us sing to the One who is worthy of all worship—the One who was, and is, and is to come.
